Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Type 1 hard hat?

A Type 1 hard hat is designed to help protect against impact and penetration to the top, or crown, of the head. Type 1 hard hats are commonly used in construction, maintenance, manufacturing, warehousing, utilities, and general industrial applications where overhead impact hazards may be present.

What is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 hard hat?

A Type 1 hard hat is designed for protection against impacts to the top of the head. A Type 2 hard hat or safety helmet is designed to provide protection from impacts to the top, sides, front, and back of the head.

Choose Type 1 head protection when top-impact protection is required. Choose Type 2 head protection when the jobsite also presents side-impact hazards, such as slips, trips, falls, low-clearance areas, work around equipment, or environments where workers may strike their head from multiple directions.

Should I choose a vented or non-vented Type 1 hard hat?

Choose a vented Type 1 hard hat when airflow, heat relief, and comfort are priorities and electrical insulation is not required. Vented hard hats are often preferred for general construction, warehouse, maintenance, landscaping, and industrial work in warmer conditions.

Choose a non-vented Type 1 hard hat when electrical protection is required or when the work environment does not allow vents. Class E hard hats are typically non-vented to help maintain electrical protection.

When should a Type 1 hard hat be replaced?

Replace a Type 1 hard hat if the shell is cracked, dented, brittle, faded, chalky, punctured, or damaged. The suspension should also be replaced if it is worn, cracked, stretched, torn, or no longer fits securely.

A hard hat should also be replaced after a significant impact, even if visible damage is not obvious. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended inspection and replacement guidance.
